![]() The improvements are distinguishable, but not noteworthy. Close-ups tend to offer better refinement and deeper resolvable texture on surfaces and physical features compared to the Blu-ray. The increase in resolution isn't always on display, especially in wide angle shots, although I believe that this is innate to the photography. Secondary hues look great, although not appreciably better. Color reproduction is consistent, with primaries like blue and red appearing richer, even a bit more delineated. I couldn’t ascertain whether it contains a 4K DI or was up-converted to 4K. Its use of color grading intentionally left certain elements appearing less visually enticing and that trend continues in its presentation in Ultra HD, which was rendered from a 3.4K source. ![]() Patriots Day garnered a solid report from me on its video quality in 1080p. Patriots Day comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment featuring 2160pHEVC encoded video and lossless DTS:X/7.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 5 Mbps. Ultra HD Blu-ray Has Come to AVS Forum Blu-ray Reviews For those not familiar with the details regarding Ultra HD Blu-ray you can refer to my article that includes some pertinent data on the subject. Ultra HD Blu-ray has finally been released and eager enthusiasts are ready and willing to see what it has to offer. I watched it with my wife and we enjoyed every minute. Patriots Day is a stirring and compelling drama that is an emotive tribute to the victims, first responders, and collaborative law enforcement/city officials that were faced with unimaginable circumstances, and proved, once again, why we should all be proud to be Americans. Simmons, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, and Michelle Monaghan were excellent in support, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Rachel Brosnahan, who I always enjoy watching. I like Mark Wahlberg and thought that he did a terrific job in this role. ![]() I appreciated being let in on some of the details of what occurred, both before and afterward, and didn’t feel as though the narrative went to great lengths to overstate the facts. At 133 minutes the film is, in my opinion, perfectly paced, as not one moment seemed wasted. A group effort for every law enforcement official and civilian involved, resulted in the outcome. We get to see things from the inside, primarily from the perspective of a Boston Police Sergeant, whose attitude reflects that of a city, that wouldn’t surrender to terror, but rather embraced one another, while ensuring that this act, was in no way going to go unpunished. As I sat and watched it I was immediately reminded of how inspirational the story is and why I like Peter Berg’s films.Ĭo-written by director Berg, along with Matt Cook, and Joshua Zetumer, Patriots Day eschews overt levels of melodrama in the depiction of the events and people in favor of a meat and potatoes narrative that tells this human-interest story in a grounded, play by play, fashion. I truly meant to get out to see Patriots Day during its theatrical run but never made it. I remember the feelings it stirred up of 9/11, and how proud I was of the tremendous and fast response of those that came to the aid of the victims, as well as the swift capture of the perpetrators. The tragic events surrounding the bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon is one that I watched as it unfolded shortly afterward on that April morning. I am a fan of fact based films, especially those that I am not only familiar with, but have witnessed.
